  • August 15 to August 28, 2024
    Exhibition Zanabazar Museum, Ulaanbaatar

The exhibition at the Zanabazar Museum marks the end of two Art Camps and brings together the collected experiences of the German-Mongolian summer of 2024. Experiences in the Bavarian cultural landscape and the Mongolian steppe contrast with modern jet-set nomadism and the effects of man-made climate change. The exhibition examines whether resilience can be found in the respective cultural contents of the different cultures, which can be activated for a changed approach to resources.
The Zanabazar Museum is the ideal location. The collection spans a wide range from Bronze Age, shamanic-Tengrian artifacts to Lamaist ritual masks and thangkhas to modern Mongol Zurag paintings. The eponym Öndör Geegen Zanabazar, 1635 - 1523, was the first spiritual leader of Gelupa Buddhism in Mongolia and the most important artist, architect, poet and scholar of his time.

    Artists:
Franz Ackermann, Heike Baranowsky, Baatarzorig Batjargal, Munkhtsetseg Batmunkh, Nomin Bold, Enkhzaya Erdenebileg, Gerelkhuu Ganbold, Karl Heinz Jeron, Simone Körner, A.R. Penck, Nadine Rennert, and other artists from the Blue Sun Center of Contemporary Art of Mongolia.

  • An afternoon with Dashdemed Sampil: an exclusive guided tour of the exhibition ‘The Post-Nomadic Experience’

The special highlight of this afternoon is an exclusive, personal tour by one of the exhibiting artists himself: Dashdemed Sampil. Born in Mongolia in 1971 and now living in Nuremberg, Sampil guides visitors through the artworks, which focus on central aspects of nomadic culture such as ‘The Great Blue Sky’ - a central, identity-forming element in Mongolian Tengrism. It becomes clear how deep the influence of these traditional world views is on contemporary art in Mongolia.

Sampil, who began his training at the University of Fine Arts in Ulan-Bator and continued his studies in Nuremberg under Professor Peter Angermann, is an artist whose works are both disturbing and fascinating. His paintings are characterised by a strong emotional power that immediately captivates the viewer. The figures in his works are crude and yet subtly haunting, their deformed shapes seem natural and at the same time deeply disturbing.

During the tour, Dashdemed Sampil will not only explain his artworks, but also talk about his travels to Mongolia and his experiences with the artistic and social developments there. This opens up a unique view of the interaction between the old nomadic traditions and the modern, globalised world. Particularly exciting: Sampil will present visual material from his recent summer trip to Mongolia and talk about the current situation for artists in this fascinating country.

The exhibition ‘The Post-Nomadic Experience’ was conceived as part of Art Camp Bavaria, an initiative that brings together artists from Germany and Mongolia. The aim of this encounter is to open up new perspectives on cultural heritage, understanding nature and the interplay between people and the environment. The exhibited works, including those of the art movement ‘Mongol Zurag - The Art of Resistance’, which recently attracted particular attention at the Biennale di Venezia, impressively illustrate the connection between cultural origins and the challenges of our time.

Be there when Dashdemed Sampil opens the doors to his world and takes us on a journey into the unbroken tradition of Mongolian culture, the beauty of the country and the challenges of our time.
