Exhibition: The post-nomadic experience in THEgallery

The exhibition uses selected works of art to convey key aspects of Mongolia's nomadic culture's understanding of nature.
At the center is “The Great Blue Sky” - an identity-forming element of Mongolian culture to this day, which refers to the principle of a shapeless sky god in Tengrism.
This principle can be seen in Bronze Age rock paintings in the Altai Mountains, which present the forces of nature in shamanic symbols. The exhibition contrasts this with the cosmologies of A.R. Penck, who translates a post-communist, fraying world into sign systems. Instead of contextualizing the material aesthetics of Joseph Beuys with Mongolian shamanism as before, the exhibition focuses on the forces of nature in Mongolia's visual memory, which come into conflict with the effects of modernity.

Other influences on contemporary Mongolian art come from Lamaism, which is still visually powerful today. A special exhibition at the Biennale di Venezia is currently dedicated to the art movement “Mongol Zurag”, in which Baatarzorig Batjargal and Gerelkhuu Ganbold are participating. Both artists use the demons of Mongol Zurag, as they can also be seen on lamaistic thangkhas, to formulate their criticism of the current social and ecological catastrophes in Mongolia. Dashdemed Sampil, who lives in Nuremberg, also draws energy from this tradition.
Franz Ackermann's artistic practice has always been nomadic. His mental maps are created as visual records and testimonies to an accelerated world that does not stop at Mongolia. Nomin Bold's colorfully decorated “gas masks” speak of the unbearable air conditions in Ulaanbaatar, the worst in the world.

An afternoon with Dashdemed Sampil: an exclusive guided tour of the exhibition ‘The Post-Nomadic Experience’

The special highlight of this afternoon is an exclusive, personal tour by one of the exhibiting artists himself: Dashdemed Sampil. Born in Mongolia in 1971 and now living in Nuremberg, Sampil guides visitors through the artworks, which focus on central aspects of nomadic culture such as ‘The Great Blue Sky’ - a central, identity-forming element in Mongolian Tengrism. It becomes clear how deep the influence of these traditional world views is on contemporary art in Mongolia.

Sampil, who began his training at the University of Fine Arts in Ulan-Bator and continued his studies in Nuremberg under Professor Peter Angermann, is an artist whose works are both disturbing and fascinating. His paintings are characterised by a strong emotional power that immediately captivates the viewer. The figures in his works are crude and yet subtly haunting, their deformed shapes seem natural and at the same time deeply disturbing.

During the tour, Dashdemed Sampil will not only explain his artworks, but also talk about his travels to Mongolia and his experiences with the artistic and social developments there. This opens up a unique view of the interaction between the old nomadic traditions and the modern, globalised world. Particularly exciting: Sampil will present visual material from his recent summer trip to Mongolia and talk about the current situation for artists in this fascinating country.

The exhibition ‘The Post-Nomadic Experience’ was conceived as part of Art Camp Bavaria, an initiative that brings together artists from Germany and Mongolia. The aim of this encounter is to open up new perspectives on cultural heritage, understanding nature and the interplay between people and the environment. The exhibited works, including those of the art movement ‘Mongol Zurag - The Art of Resistance’, which recently attracted particular attention at the Biennale di Venezia, impressively illustrate the connection between cultural origins and the challenges of our time.

International Week 2024 from September 20 to October 6, 2024 Bamberg-Land

An event as part of the international ART CAMP Bavaria-Mongolia, “The post-nomadic experience - culture, nature and sustainability” by ZEIGENeV.

In the rooms of the old mill of THEgallery or in the Mongolian yurts on the meadows around the mill, we would like to organize a game and cultural evening for the International Week. In connection with the ARTcamp Mongolia - Bavaria, we would like to introduce our guests to the culture, history and contemporary art of Mongolia. In cooperation with the Mongolian Cultural Association Nuremberg, a games evening with traditional games such as “Shagai” (bone game), “Alag Malchii” or “multi-colored turtle”, as well as chess, dominoes and chorol will take place.

The Mongolian Cultural Association accompanies the evening with stalls where Mongolian food, handicrafts and traditional costumes can be presented and sold. Small talks or presentations about culture, history, traditional costumes and handicrafts are also available. Guests immerse themselves in a traditional evening and experience the nomadic life of Mongolian culture.

Immerse yourself in the rich traditions and diverse stories of this fascinating cultural region. Experience the beauty of the Mongolian language and be inspired by the works of talented authors such as Gangaamaa Purevdorj, a renowned Mongolian author and translator who lives and works in both Germany and Mongolia.

Gangaamaa Purevdorj, born in Mongolia in 1967, studied at the Technical University of Dresden and completed her doctorate at the University of Regensburg. She has been working as a freelance author since 2013. She has now published three volumes of short stories. She travels throughout the German-speaking world with her readings and reading concerts. To date, she has translated around three hundred poems by over 50 Mongolian authors into German. In 2016, she received the German Translators' Fund Award. Gangaamaa Purevdorj lives in Germany and Mongolia.
